Our 8 Favorite Babymoon Destinations in the US & Europe

babymoon_destinations

Summer's starting to make an appearance, so naturally, we're starting to crave a good getaway. If you happen to be pregnant as we head into the warmer months, there's no better excuse for a holiday than a babymoon!

We know it sounds a little glamorous, but a babymoon can be anything you want it to be — you don't need to jet off somewhere exotic to truly enjoy it. A long weekend trip can be just what you and your partner need before you take on parenthood together.

Even though it's called a babymoon, this 'last hurrah' trip is more about you and your partner — a chance to connect, spend time together, and prioritize your relationship before baby comes. We've pulled together some of our favorite destinations on both sides of the pond to relax, unwind, and celebrate the relationship that led to this pregnancy in the first place!

These locations may be a short trip away, but if you're traveling across the country or abroad, you'll want to get the green light for air travel from your doctor, especially if you're in the later stages of pregnancy.

Typically, the second trimester is considered the best time to travel, since you're past the lethargy and nausea of the first trimester but without the potential travel risks of the third.  It's always important to take your personal situation into account (and check out air travel guidance from the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology here).

Here are a few things to keep in mind when you’re planning your babymoon:

  1. Travel with copies of your ultrasounds and blood tests (just in case)

  2. Scout out local hospitals wherever you're traveling for peace of mind

  3. Confirm with your airline that they'll allow you to fly at your stage of pregnancy

Now, with that out of the way, here's our curated list of babymoon destinations across the US and Europe — whether you're looking for fresh mountain air or sandy beaches, we've got you covered!

1. Lake Tahoe, Nevada

lakefront-edgewood-tahoe_babymoon.jpg

Why you should go: If you're a lover of the outdoors, you need to visit Lake Tahoe — clear blue water, fresh mountain air, stunning views... what's not to love? The lake itself is tucked into the Sierra Nevada mountain range, and the surrounding area is full of hiking trails, parks, and restaurants. We can't think of a better way to recharge before baby!

Where to stay:  The Edgewood Tahoe Lodge is truly luxurious — every room and suite has its own private fireplace, deck, soaking tub, and walk-in shower. You can also wake up every morning to a view that overlooks the lake and mountains, and keep your zen going by booking in for a massage or hydrating body treatment at the hotel's spa. The hotel has three restaurants, too, perfect for days when you're feeling tired and want to stay in.

What to do:  Explore the myriad hiking trails and parks — some top choices are the Mt. Tallac Trail and scenic Lake Tahoe State Park. For stunning views, head to Lower Eagle Falls to see the incredible waterfall (the viewing spot is a quick hike from the parking lot)! Finish the trip by basking in the Sierra sun and cooling off with a dip in the water at one of Tahoe's sandy beaches.

2. Sedona, Arizona

sedona_babymoon.jpg

Why you should go: Named USA Weekend's Most Beautiful Place in America, Sedona doesn't disappoint. This desert paradise is the perfect combination of geological beauty and holiday luxury. You can enjoy the views and trails in 1.8 million acres of National Forest land and then refresh with great food, quirky shopping, and a relaxing spa in town.

Where to stay: Sedona claims to be the bed & breakfast capital of Arizona, and despite some stiff competition, the Canyon Villa Bed & Breakfast is definitely our favorite. Luxurious yet homey, the B&B was designed to showcase the Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte, so there's no shortage of stunning views. Each room is uniquely decorated in its own style and has french doors that open to a balcony overlooking red rocks. With a temperature-regulated outdoor pool, a cozy library, and a daily three-course breakfast, you couldn't ask for a better place to unwind with your partner.

What to do: Take a hike and soak up the sun (with plenty of sunblock and water!) on the 300+ miles of trails (we don't expect you to do all 300 miles of course...), then enjoy the views and beautiful creek at Slide Rock State Park, a 43-acre historic apple farm in Oak Creek Canyon. Refuel at one of the many restaurants in town, and relax at one of the spas — there are loads to choose from!

3. Canyon Point, Utah

Why you should go: For a luxurious, restorative experience, Amangiri is the place to go. Located in a remote part of the Utah desert, the resort is 25 minutes from the closest town, and it feels like a world of its own. It offers a perfectly relaxing desert oasis, and if you're up for it, a day trip to the Grand Canyon is within reach!

Where to stay: Amangiri is a truly unique experience — it even required an Act of Congress for permission to be built in the desert area. Situated on 600 acres of untouched land, the complex features 34 suites and a desert-view spa that promotes wellness through traditional Navajo healing traditions. The Navajo culture is central to the Amangiri experience as a whole, actually, and their restaurant uses farm-fresh produce to make delicious meals that reflect their Southwestern traditions.

What to do: When you get tired of enjoying the desert-facing pool (unlikely), enjoy some of the many spa treatments available: massages, scrubs, wraps, and even flotation therapy (the ultimate relief when pregnant). There's plenty you can do to get close to your partner, too — a sunset hike, a luxurious dinner at the complex, and nighttime stargazing. Each room has an extensive private terrace and outdoor fireplace that makes it ideal for cozy, cuddly evenings.

4. Little Torch Key, Florida

Why you should go: If you want the ultimate in relaxation, privacy, and luxury (and you have the budget to match) then Little Palm Island Resort & Spa is calling your name. The resort is located on a private island off the Florida Keys and boasts beautiful clear water, soft sandy beaches, palm trees... it's a true island escape.

Where to stay: Little Palm Island Resort & Spa has a few rules you'll want to be aware of ahead of time: no phones, television, or children under 16 allowed. It may sound a bit extreme, but it definitely guarantees a restful, blissfully disconnected stay that can be just what you need while pregnant. Stay in one of the 30 oceanfront thatch-roof bungalows and wake up to the sound of the ocean and fresh sea air, then spend the day relaxing on the beach. You'll feel refreshed and even closer to your partner — in fact, Travel + Leisure Magazine called the resort 'Florida's most secluded and romantic retreat’. Yes, please!

What to do: Relax with a book and a cold beverage in a beachfront cabana, and take a dip in the beautiful turquoise waters. When you need a break from the beach, take to the water and try out snorkeling, fishing, or set out on a boat ride. You'll likely work up an appetite by the end of the day, and their seasonally fresh menu (which they call 'Modern Tropical Cuisine') is available in the dining room or in your room... a delicious dinner in bed with your partner sounds like the best way to wind down.

Alternatives to noteIf this all feels like a little much, there are some amazing, more reasonably priced options in the Keys as well. We recommend The Marker Waterfront Resort and the Ocean Key Resort & Spa

4 babymoon destinations in Europe…

1. Ambleside, The Lake District, UK

lake_district_babymoon

Why you should go: If you’re in the UK and want a staycation full of nature and walking, then there’s no better place than the Lake District. There are lots of towns and villages to choose from, but we recommend staying in Ambleside. It’s situated on the tip of Lake Windermere and surrounded by hiking trails but the town is big enough that you can do a little retail therapy and spend the evenings at nice restaurants.

Where to stay: The Waterhead Inn is 4-star lakeside hotel, just a 1-minute walk from the center of Ambleside. The hotel serves continental breakfast and the luxury bedrooms are cozy to snuggle down at the end of a long day of exploring.

What to do: We definitely recommend trying out some of the hiking trails in the area if you're feeling up to it - remember to wear sunscreen & drink plenty of water! In the town center, check out Bridge House, a historical landmark that's worth seeing. You can also take boat trips on Windermere which is perfect when the weather is right!

2. Edinburgh, Scotland

Edinburgh_Scotland_Babymoon

Why you should go: Edinburgh is the perfect city break in the UK — it’s compact (and hilly!) with beautiful Edinburgh Castle looking over the city. If you’re more into city breaks over nature, then this is the UK staycation for you.

Where to stay: If you’re looking for a real slice of luxury, then we recommend staying at the Waldorf Astoria, The Caledonian. With incredible views of Edinburgh Castle and steps from the Princes Street Gardens, it’s the perfect base to see the city. Plus, when you want to unwind the hotel has a spa and indoor pool.

What to do: For views, visit Arthur's Seat, the remains of an extinct volcano that overlooks the city, and Calton Hill, a great place to sit and take in the city around the large national monument of Scotland. You have to see Edinburgh Old Town, as well as Edinburgh Castle.

3. Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona_Spain_Babymoon

Why you should go: Barcelona is a city break with a twist: it’s on the beach. Take a few days exploring the city and a few soaking up the sun, sea, and sand. Barcelona is also well connected and easy to get to from the UK and other parts of Europe.

Where to stay: Located in the heart of the Gothic Quarter and with its incomparable views of Barcelona Cathedral, we recommend Hotel Colon. Even if your room doesn’t have a view of the Cathedral, the hotel’s rooftop area has sun loungers and a small pool for you to sit and take it all in.

What to do: We’ve mentioned the beach and the cathedral, but Barcelona has a lot more to offer. Barcelona architecture is most famous for Antoni Gaudí’s designs, including the Sagrada Família, Park Güell, Casa Milá, and Casa Batlló — all worth a visit. If you want to take in the whole city, you can get a hop-on-hop-off bus tour — we know it can feel a bit touristy, but it’s a great option if the weather is hot and you have a lot of places you want to see.

4. Roquebrune-sur-Argens, France

Roquebrune-sur-Argens_France_Babymoon

Why you should go: Roquebrune-sur-Argens is nestled in the southeastern region of France, near the French Riviera. The town is full of historical charm and architecture and is just a few kilometers from the coast.

Where you should stay: Hotel Le Daya, France, is the place for a restorative babymoon. This five-star hotel has both sea and golf course views, where you can relax on the terrace or at the spa and be surrounded by mountains.

What to do: At the hotel, relax at the indoor pool, get a massage or a variety of other spa treatments, or play a round of golf. If you’ve had enough of all that (we doubt you will though!), the beach is also just 4km away and great for a day trip. Or head into the historic town and check out the 16th century gothic-style Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul.
